[All that can be heard is the sound of a man spilling his guts- Literally. He's losing his lunch over and over again. After an dismaying array of wretching noises, a voice finally echoes throughout.]
[tfw the last person you want to show good will to is the one who'd probably be the most beneficial...
Unfortunately, the pros outweigh the cons, and that's why Sakamoto will find a bottle of sake outside his door that evening. The most notable thing about it, perhaps, is that it doesn't look particularly cheap. There's also a small card, handwritten, that reads:
"Happy New Year. Try not to drink it all in one night."
Like with Zura's gift, the card is unsigned, but the handwriting might look familiar (assuming he's sober enough to notice something like that, which he probably isn't). Whoever left it is nowhere to be found.]
( It's a lovely evening on the colony tonight and after what feels like a series of rather unfortunate events with the holidays, the convention, and the crazy soul stealing paparazzi, the two of them needed a break. Maybe Mutsu suggested! Maybe Sakamoto did! Either way, here they are out and about, hopefully having a good time.
Mutsu himself isn't drinking very much right now, taking on a more "responsible" role for the time being, keeping an eye out on Sakamoto. Look, considering how their first meeting went, he feels like he needs to look out for him! It's still safe right now which is why when Sakamoto finishes his current drink, Mutsu asks, )
[Sakamoto lets out a happy sigh as he finishes his drink; froth still sitting atop his upper lip.
After a day of trying events, he's tired and in need of a lot more than just one drink. Still, he's curious- What are those cameras made of, exactly? The technology here is fascinating, just as much or even moreso than that of the Amanto back home. He clicks his tongue thoughtfully, before turning to Mutsu.]
Do I ever settle for just one?
[He's positive his other self is as much of an alcoholic as he is, or at least, he'd be a good competitor.]
[ there's a box addressed to sakamoto on his doorstep. inside he'll find it full of gauze, bandages, medical tape, and anything else he would need to temporarily patch up an injury. there's a small note included: ]
[ Over the past day or so, Katsura has been acting a little odd. Sakamoto has probably noticed it, but he seems more tensed than ever. Zura himself is particularly tensed regardless, but he hasn't left their apartment since ViVid glitched. It's weird behavior for somebody has hard working as he is, but he doesn't want to talk about it. He isn't really talking much, either, for that matter, and surely Sakamoto has questioned him about it only to get him closing himself off even more.
Such a fussy thing.
However, Sakamoto's door cracks open in the middle of the night. The weight of somebody else joining him in bed is felt. Without a word, Katsura slips under the blankets next to him. ]
[Sakamoto wants to say something, offer a word of kindness or support, but he doesn't. Zura doesn't want to talk right now, so he'll respect that.
His shoulder is bandaged properly now, though it's in the process of healing. The merchant opens one eye to see if Zura is asleep, and after doing so, he closes it shut again while scooting closer to the other man. After a moment, he drapes an arm around Zura's body, acting as though it's an unconscious movement.
He understands that once, one night after doing something like this, he had disappeared.
[ it's five to eight by the time celty pulls up to sakamoto's workplace, stopping next to the entrance. though she had meant to get there right at eight, she found she couldn't really sit still at home while waiting, filled with a sort of restless nervous energy that she wasn't sure what to do with. vietnam had reassured her that everything would be fine, to take things slow, but at the end of the day she still had her doubts.
she only hoped the night would pass without any difficulties. it's just a date, it's not really a big deal. right? ]
[Sakamoto bursts through the doors with his shoulders thrust back, smiling as if he has no cares in the world. Oddly enough, his intentions are pure as can be- He expects nothing more from this encounter than interesting conversation and good company.
When he sees her, he wonders if perhaps the clock at work was slow. Her body is tense, and it's almost as if she'd been waiting for him for hours.]
Hey there!
[He waves enthusiastically in her direction, strolling over. Sakamoto removes his glasses and places them in his pocket, a gesture of gratitude, as she's giving him something more valuable than money- Time. He then looks at her eyes that could hold an entire galaxy of stars within them, offering her a subtle upturn of the lips.
What draws him in is not her perfect hourglass shape, but the glimmer of her kind soul.]
So! What's the plan for tonight? Dinner, drinks, a movie?
Or, or! Do you just want to get to know each other?
[ Right. So they've both been acting a little funny lately. It's been about three months since Katsura first arrived here and so much has happened since then. He's glad he has company here with him, however. A part of him is worried about Sakamoto for several reasons, but he it ultimately thankful for his presence.
Katsura is seated on his haunches in the bedroom with the door open, knees on a little pillow and gaze fixated on his reflection in a floor vanity. He's dressed in a familiar attire, and yet.. he had no reason to wear it? Disguises were disguises for a reason, but looks like he was wearing it for another purpose.
He's too busy brushing his hair over his shoulder. Katsura isn't going to be the one to initiate the conversation, so it's up to Tatsuma to say something. ]
[ at the end of the day, sakamoto will find a delicately wrapped box in his office. should he open it, he'll find an assortment of handmade chocolates of different flavors. some of them have alcohol in it others are plain, have fun finding out which is which.
there's a note attached: ]
Wishing you a Happy Valentine's Day. I hope you like them.
While these are well-crafted, there's no doubt about it- They're handmade. Sakamoto's received dozens of boxes on this day every year, packaged and often expensive, from Amanto business partners who are familiar with the holiday.
This day has been about profit for so long, a celebration of how the Kaientai's sales skyrocket during this season, and yet... Is this the first time he's received something so personal? Maybe, maybe not.
His fingers trace over her handwriting, stopping at her name.]
( Tomorrow is "Valentines." It's a western holiday in which everyone gives the people most important to them small gifts like chocolate. Uhm... well, it's normally more for romantic lovers but he's heard that it's okay to give things to friends and family too, especially if you care for them a lot!
Anyway tomorrow is a special day and he wants to gather some intell. When would be best to give him his gift? And... what are his plans? Is he going to go on a special date with anyone? But when he looked in his phone to ask him that way, he couldn't find his name! No name! No picture! Nothing.
A lot of people had recently gone missing... but at the same time, he'd also recently been unable to see some people who were clearly still around. So he's gone to Sakamoto's place to investigate for himself! He fidgets a bit in front of the door before knocking. What if... he's gone too...?
[Sakamoto opens the door, sans jacket, but clad in everything else. He supposes that the visitor is someone who wishes to see Zura, as the merchant himself barely frequents the apartment.
When he sees who it is, Sakamoto smiles, though he lets go of the doorknob quickly. Everything feels so damn cold, it's awful.]
Oh, what's this? An old friend decided to drop by!
[Still, Mutsu manages to make Sakamoto grin from ear to ear.]
she's been hearing the same thing for the past day or so: a strange, disturbing song that had made itself known the night before when she went to bed. it kept her up the whole night, nothing she did could quiet it and it had only gotten louder throughout the day, keeping her on edge as she made her deliveries.
it's the same tonight, but louder. she lays on her back, looking up at the ceiling as the song plays over and over again, muscles tense and exhausted. eventually, she picks up her device, sending a short message: ]
( WHAT AN AWFUL FEW DAYS it's been but now that things seem back to normal, Mutsu will return to Sakamoto's door and... look around to make sure no one else is watching! He isn't going to break in or anything strange like that, but he's also shy about being caught in the act!
Today is a day you give chocolate to the people you really care about! It's my first time celebrating today so I wanted to share with you too! Celebrate with someone special, OK?
[ what an awful week. thankfully, things seemed to have calmed down now and she's managed to have settled in another apartment. once everything's been set up, she sends him a text. ]
How are you? It's been a rough few days. Are you feeling okay?
[ Without any sort of warning, the familiar nagging is heard around Sakamoto's apartment today. Zura didn't appear in Sakamoto's bed like when he lost in CERES and was penalized. Instead, he is wandering about the place like nothing had ever even changed, and his voice cried out in complete dismay: ]
SAKAMOTO!!! DID YOU USE TOO MUCH TOILET PAPER AGAIN!?
[ the disaster he is referring to could easily be interpreted at the fact their bathroom was flooded, but actually, Katsura was actually referencing the entire flooding that effected all of Tellus.
[ the first thing she did after they were released was go downstairs to find vietnam. physically they were fine, CERES always did do a relatively good job of making things look fine on the surface, but their mentally, that was a completely different story. she tried not to dwell on the experience, shoving the memories to the back of her mind to make sure the others were safe.
later, she went back to her apartment and took a long bath, hugging her knees to herself as she sat in the silence of her bathroom. but even the silence is too loud and so she does the next best thing.
it takes her a while to find the right things to say, but eventually she sends him a short text: ]
Hello. I'm very sorry for disappearing without letting you know beforehand. If you are free tonight, would you mind if we met?
( After having a certain near death experience, Mutsu has fled Sword Haus. He can't stay there. The Shinsengumi are all over the place. He's getting flashbacks to Kyoto and not exactly of the good kind. They're taking over. They're trying to convert the apartment into a new headquarters. They can deny it but he sees it happening. The sword of Sakamoto Ryoma can't stay in a place like that, not when the colony is doing something weird to him and making him feel so tired. He doesn't have the energy to run these days and he can't let himself get caught so the next best thing he can do is hide. Find a safe place to stay.
Which is what brings Mutsu to Sakamoto's door. The doorbell rings and there's a knock. When Sakamoto answers, he'll find his sword... looking like something the cat dragged in. His shoulders are slumped and though his clothes are always a little torn up, he looks ragged. Even his cowlicks are down and subdued, one of his ear-like curls completely missing after a certain close encounter. He's also making a noise... something like a whine.
Sakamoto opens the door, looking a little worse for the wear as well. That doesn't matter, however, as he's surprised by the sight at his doorstep. Here is an old friend, a dear friend, someone who doesn't deserve what he's gotten. The merchant may not know the details, but his sword isn't one to start a fight or perturb another person without reason.
Mutsu will find that, like always, Sakamoto's arms are open to him.]
Oh man. You get into a fight or somethin'?
[Gently, very gently, he touches the side of Mutsu's face, checking for injuries, any bleeding from the ears or nostrils. Sword or not, his body is made of flesh in this world, and it seems as though he can really be injured the way a human mortal can.]
'Cause I sure as hell know that you weren't the one who started it.
[Sakamoto pushes the door with one shoulder, ushering Mutsu inside with the other. For a brief moment, he pulls the other close, so that the little sword's head can lean on his shoulder.
[ A note is on the futon whenever Sakamoto decides to come home and see it: ]
Sakamoto, I will not be coming home this evening. Better yet, I may not come home for a few days. Please do not worry. I am on the run and will be staying in various inns until I feel safe instead of just settling in one location. Elizabeth is with me.
I apologize to not bring this up to you sooner, but you are one of my closest and beloved friends that I have had the pleasure of knowing and being with— and I value this more than life itself, as precious of a thing as it is.
My friends are even more precious and valuable to me, and I have my reasons for doing the things that I do. I hope you are not angry with me.
If I do not return within a week, I encourage you to further look into CERES and their business. These people are evil, and I am tired of seeing the innocent terrorized. Everybody should feel this way, and it infuriates me to no end. That is all.
P.S: Also please record "Whose Cat is it Anyway?" for me. It airs on Thursday nights at 8 PM on channel 127.
[ the last time she went on some recklessly planned mission, she didn't return for a week and sakamoto thought she was done with him. she doesn't know if the same thing will happen this time around, but she figures she should leave something just in case.
there's a bag of assorted handmade cookies addressed to him outside his door and a note: ]
I hope these find you well. I may be gone for the next few days, but I'll be fine, don't worry. If you need anything, feel free to contact Vietnam.
Ah, love! A beautiful thing to see, but to feel? Only half the time, when it doesn't hurt. Sakamoto is suddenly reminded why he doesn't date, why he only is only committed to his job- Because a love like this is a distraction, filling him with passion and joy, misery and anger... Where did he go wrong? He had been so careful, before...
12/31
Unfortunately, the pros outweigh the cons, and that's why Sakamoto will find a bottle of sake outside his door that evening. The most notable thing about it, perhaps, is that it doesn't look particularly cheap. There's also a small card, handwritten, that reads:

ACTION backdated
Which is what brings Mutsu to Sakamoto's door. The doorbell rings and there's a knock. When Sakamoto answers, he'll find his sword... looking like something the cat dragged in. His shoulders are slumped and though his clothes are always a little torn up, he looks ragged. Even his cowlicks are down and subdued, one of his ear-like curls completely missing after a certain close encounter. He's also making a noise... something like a whine.
Take him in. )

Poor thing.]
You'll be alright, kiddo. I'm here for ya.

[ NOTICE ] 4/8, afternoon or evening, whenever he may get it
Sakamoto,
I will not be coming home this evening.
Your friend and comrade,
— Katsura Kotarou ❀

there's a bag of assorted handmade cookies addressed to him outside his door and a note: ]
I hope these find you well. I may be gone for the next few days, but I'll be fine, don't worry. If you need anything, feel free to contact Vietnam.
I love you.

Three words that could kill a man.
To make himself unlovable.
Things have changed.]
